Title - Emotional Design: Why We Love (or Hate) Everyday Things
Authors - Donald A. Norman
Chapter 1
Summary
The main focus of this chapter is dealing with attractive designs. According to the authors, things that have been design to be aesthetically pleasing to the human eye seem to be more helpful. This gives users a more positive outlook on the item. Also, The author mentions visceral, behavioral, and reflexive as the three levels of processing.
Discussion
I enjoyed the first chapter of Emotional Design. I liked the style used by Norman in Everyday Things so I hope he keeps this same style in this book. It was interesting to look at how things that have a better look can really increase productivity. I can see myself getting stressed out at products that just seem to bug after long periods of time working on them
Chapter 2
Summary
This chapter was centered around sentimental objects in the workplace. The author discusses the 3 different levels of designs: Visceral, Behavior, and Reflective. The author goes on to discuss how difficult it is to match and fill all 3 of these different levels.
Discussion
I really enjoyed reading this chapter. I liked the author's perspective on emotional attachment to objects. People get attached to objects and things the more and more they use and see them.
Chapter 3
Summary
The author goes into alot more detail pertaining to the 3 levels of design. visceral is first discussed which deal more with of how the physical look at feel will affect the user. Next, is the behavioral design which deals with how function of the object relates to the user. Finally, the reflective design focuses on sentimental meaning of the object to the user
Discussion
It seems that Norman is intentionally contrasting himself in this book vs The Design Of Everyday Things. I can only assume he is doing this on purpose but not really sure why.
